Well, the last time I checked, Kitui Institute of
development studies was in Kitui town CBD. When you get to Kitui town CBD, you
will find that one of the major streets there is known as Kilungya street. It
is along the said Kilungya street that you will find the Kitui institute of development
studies – somewhere close to Kitui’s Naivas supermarket.
Interacting with a few of the students who study at the
Kitui institute of development studies, I came
to learn that their school offers a number of certificate and diploma level
courses. The students I was speaking to told me that they were enrolled in the
certificate courses, and interacting with them, I got the impression that they
were getting a decent technical education in a busy urban setting... Two of
them told them that they were studying at Kitui institute of development
studies (or KIDS as they called it) with a view to get certificates after which
they would start looking for jobs. The third one told me that her eyes were
trained on the entrepreneurial route after graduating from KIDS, although she
wouldn’t mind working for a while initially in order to raise the capital…
What
I like about schools like Kitui Institute of Development Studies is the fact that
they tend to offer marketable courses. It helps too that the urban setting in which the Kitui Institute of Development Studies operates is one that is likely to attract qualified and experienced lecturers (unlike the colleges in the interior that tend to struggle to attract qualified and experienced lecturers).
And as the students told me, the fees payment arrangements are quite flexible.
And the fact that the Kitui Institute of Development Studies is in a busy urban setting means that the students get a chance to network with individuals who can help them secure jobs later, and the busy urban setting also translates into opportunities for part-time work which can help in offsetting fees payments. Furthermore, the busy urban setting also means that the kids get lots of exposure which can then help them later in their professional pursuits…
