Well, I think that the Akamba Handicraft workshop and
exhibition center is on the road that connects Changamwe to the Moi
International Airport in Mombasa. It is quite close to where the airport road
connects with the Magongo road at the changamwe interchange. It is right
opposite the junction between the airport road and chaani road. It is in the same compound with
Akamba Arts Bar (though I think it rebranded to something else) and behind it
is the newly built Tamasha beer distributors Changamwe/Mombasa West Depot. Opposite
the Akamba Handicraft Mombasa workshop it is the Dala Dala Travelers Boma café,
and indeed many of the people who dine at the Dala Dala Travelers Boma café seem
to be the craftsmen working at the workshop, besides other Chaani residents.
If you venture into the Akamba handicraft workshop, you will find Kamba craftsmen, truly talented artists, making carvings of various real-life subjects from wood.
My understanding is that some of the carvings made at the
Akamba handicraft workshop are sold right there in the workshop. Others are
sold to people who operate in tourist hotels, where tourists are able to buy
them to serve as momentos or souvenirs of their Kenya visits. I also think that some
of the carvings made at the Akamba handicraft workshop are exported, but I
could be wrong.
On the
other side of Changamwe, at the so-called Magongo market close to Changamwe
post office and opposite Changamwe deputy county commissioner’s office, there
are more Kamba carvers who practice their craft from there.
