Well, my understanding is that there are four main benefits
of being the leader of majority in the Kenyan senate.
Firstly, as the leader of majority in the senate, you get to
enjoy a lot publicity. You inevitably get mentioned more frequently in the
media. And in almost all meetings, you are given a special opportunity to
address the people. This can help in building up your political brand.
Secondly, as the leader of majority in the Kenyan senate you
get to enjoy a special status in the parliament. You get to speak first, you
often get to speak more and you generally enjoy special recognition.
Thirdly, as the leader of majority in the senate, you get to
more security and more staff to facilitate your operations. That would include
chase cars, more guards at your home and office, staff like legal researchers
and so on.
Fourthly,
as the leader of majority in the Kenyan senate, you get to enjoy special
allowances. The last time I checked what I read in the Daily Nation was that
the leader of majority in the Kenyan senate gets/at that time got up to 400,000 shillings
(around $4,000) above what the other senators get. That was at the time when Elgeiyo Marakwet
Senator Onesmus Kipchumba Murkomen was being ousted as the leader of majority in the
Kenyan senate and replaced with Pokot Senator Samuel Poghisio.
