A young friend of mine, who has this strange lifelong ambition to
become a prison officer was asking me yesterday if I had an idea as to when the
next Kenya prison recruitment would be. I told him that I have no idea, but
what he needs to do is keep on checking in the media (especially the Daily
Nation and the Standard) because that is usually where Kenya Prisons
recruitment exercises are usually advertised.
The problem with the Kenya Prisons recruitment exercise is
that it doesn’t usually attract as much publicity as the Kenya Police
recruitment exercise. This notwithstanding the fact that Kenya Prisons officers
earn almost the same as the Kenya Police officers. And this notwithstanding the
fact that the jobs that secured during Kenya Prisons recruitment exercises tend
to be lifelong, just like the jobs that are secured during the Kenya Police
recruitment exercises.
Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that many
people view prison work as being somewhat less prestigious than police jobs. Although in actual fact, both prisons and police officers are important cogs in the criminal justice system. Anyway, because of the lower esteem associated with prisons work nobody would be surprised if his son or daughter expressed an ambition
to become a police officer, but many people would raise eyebrows if their kids
expressed ambitions to become prisons officers (as is the case with the young
friend of mine I made reference to earlier, who has a lifelong ambition to
become a Kenya Prisons officer). All said and done, if you want to know when
the next Kenya Prisons recruitment exercise will be, what you need to do is
keep on checking in the newspapers.
