Well, Kongowea market in Mombasa is to be found just across
the Nyali Bridge/Nyali Traffic Lights junction. So, coming from Mombasa Island, you just cross the Nyali
bridge, and the area starting from Nyali lights is what we refer to as Kongowea
market.
At Nyali lights, if you turn right (to take the Fidel Odinga
road that lead into Nyali estate), you will see a conspicuous footbridge that goes
overhead. Directly below that footbridge is the entrance to the Kongowea
market. There is another entrance to the Kongowea market that is around the
area where the Nyali DO office is.
If you are coming from Mombasa west (Magongo, Migadini, Mikindani, Miritini and so on), you will find various
Kongowea bound matatus (though they tend to be fewer/less frequent than those
that are headed to Ferry/those headed to Mwembe.) Instead of waiting too much, you can pick a
matatu from whichever corner of Changamwe to saba saba, then at saba saba, take
a matatu to ‘lights’. Then alight at Lights and cross over to Kongowea market...
Coming from North Cost (Bamburi or Mtwapa or Bombolulu), you
just take any matatu that is headed to town, alight at ‘Lights’, then cross
over to Kongowea market.
Coming from Nyali estate, you need to take one of the Nyali
Reef matatus headed to town, then alight at Kongowea.
Some
of the products that you can get really good deals for at Kongowea market in Mombasa
include clothing items (including bedsheets and curtains as well as Mitumba second hand clothing) and food
items (especially the fresh produce items).
