Well, I don’t understand what exactly you mean by ‘travel
from Likoni to Mombasa’, because Likoni itself is in Mombasa. In fact, Likoni
is one of the major neighborhoods in Mombasa, and one of the 6 constituencies
that make Mombasa (the other 5 being Mvita, Nyali, Kisauni, Changamwe and Jomvu).
Anyway back to your question: if you want to move from
Likoni mainland to the Mombasa CBD (Mombasa Island), you have to take the
ferry. There have been talks of building the Likoni bridge or the Likoni cable car, but for now, only the ferry is operational. So you move from whichever corner of Likoni you are at (whether it is Ujamaa or Mtongwe or Shelly Beach or Jamvi la Wageni or Mtaa wa Maka or Mtaa wa Medina or Soweto or Likoni flats... or whatever other area) to the Likoni
ferry crossing, board the ferry there, and within 10 or so minutes, you would
be at the other side of the ferry crossing, in Mombasa. If you are traveling on
foot, you won’t have to pay anything at Likoni Ferry, as crossing is free for
pedestrians. But if you have a vehicle, you will have to pay a small fee to
board the ferry at Likoni. There are a number of ferry vessels there, including
the MV Nyayo, the MV Harambee, the MV Likoni, MV Kwale, MV Jambo and the MV
Safari.
After crossing to the Island side, you will probably have to
board one of the matatus that go to Mwembe Tayari or ‘Posta’ in order to get to
the actual Mombasa central business district. Alternatively, you can walk – it should
be a 15 or so minute walk.
In calculating
how much time you need to move from Likoni to Mombasa, you have to factor in
the amount of time you will have to wait for the ferry to come (on average around 20
minutes), the amount of time it will take for the ferry to cross the channel
(on average around 7 minutes), and the amount of time it will take you to disembark
from the ferry (which can be as much as 5 minutes)...
