Yes, I think that they are related.
Some time ago, I remember reading a Daily Nation writeup on
Arnold Origi, and they mentioned something to the effect that he was born in
Dandora, in a football family, of which one member was Mike Okoth. The Mike Okoth in question here is of course the father
to Divock Origi, the Belgian Liverpool player with Kenyan roots. So from that
report, I gathered that Mike Okoth (who is Divock Origi’s father) is uncle to
Arnold Origi the Kenyan goalkeeper.
So what I gather is this: that Divock Origi is the son of
Arnold Origi’s uncle. Which therefore means that they are cousins, though in
Luo culture, they would probably be considered to ‘brothers’ of some sort.
Divock Origi is probably the first person with Kenyan roots
to play in the FIFA football world cup – I could be wrong -- (where he appeared
for Belgian, given the fact that he is Belgium-Born). His father Mike Okoth was
also a serious player, with major exploits over his decades long footballing
player. Arnold Origi, on his part, is one of Kenya’s best goalkeepers of all
time, having appeared for Harambee Stars during some of its most memorable
matches.
What
becomes clear looking at the Divock Origi Arnold Origi Mike Okoth chain is that
football talent is inborn. Of course, it helps when one is born in sporting
families, as there are role models to look up to, and established players to
hold one’s hands as he tries to rise up in the sport.
