Yesterday, at one of the Mangwes where palm wine is sold in
Mombasa, a fierce argument erupted over whether Kisasi Boys Band is still
active. One of the fellas, who I later gathered is from Kibwezi was arguing
that Kisasi Boys band is still active (and that he had recently see in performing), even as his colleagues were of the view
that Kisasi Boys Band is no longer active.
The Kisasi Boys Band in question here, which is led by
Franco was very popular in the early 2000s, especially with their ‘Kitunguu ni
Mukaangile’ catchphrase. Alex Kasau (Katombi Mweene), who has since become one
of the leading stars in Kamba music was nurtured at Kisasi Boys Band, before
venturing out on his own to start the Nguuni Lovers Lovers outfit.
As
for Franco/Kitunguu ni Mukaangile, I once heard him speaking on a Ngui Situ interview with Michael
Kyalo at Musyi FM. He said that although he is still active in music, he had
scaled down on activities over the years as family and other responsibilities crept in.
But he does give performances every once in a while, and on that particular Saturday,
he was on his way to Mombasa to perform at the grand opening of the Big
Brothers club (Kwa Mwosa Vata) in Apolo area of Changamwe in Mombasa.
