Kibarani bridge (officially known as Makupa causeway)
connects the island of Mombasa with the Mombasa West mainland. It is also the
road that is used by vehicles coming from upcountry to enter the Island of
Mombasa, which is also the Mombasa CBD.
I don’t know if improvement/reconstruction of the Kibarani bridge is one of the
things that are supposed to be done in the course of the ongoing upgrade of
Mombasa to Mariakani (phase one Mombasa to Jomvu) works. Either way, a time
will come when the Kibarani bridge will have to be improved. In my view, an
improved Kibarani bridge would be one that is wider – so that the pedestrians
and cyclists don’t have to walk so close to the water on the section that goes
into Mombasa Island. And so that on the other side of the Kibarani bridge (the
side from town/Mombasa Island) pedestrians don’t have to walk right on the
railway. I think that Kibarani bridge was originally designed at a time when
there wasn’t much pedestrian traffic moving from town to Mombasa west and vice
versa on foot. But that has changed over the years, and many poor residents of
Mombasa west nowadays often have to cross over to town on foot...
I also think that an improved Kibarani bridge would have better
guardrails on the raised side (the side coming from town/Mombasa island). I always
shudder to imagine what would happen if a vehicle was to fall over from the raised
side to the lower side…
In the meantime, the least that can be done is
to improve the tarmac on Kibarani bridge, so that vehicles don’t have to swerve
to avoid the rough patches. I think the company working on the project (the china CCCC
company) has lately done something about that though.. The tarmac on at least one side of Kibarani bridge has become less rough, though the last time I passed through there it was late at night I couldn't see clearly what had been done to the bridge tarmac.
