The first time I came across Kana Nicko’s Kamba Rhumba music
was at one of the pubs at Wote. We had been at that pub for two or so
hours. For most of that time, we had been listening to music from Maima,
Kativui, Katombi, Vuusya Uungu, Kilinga, Mada/Nganangu – until someone requested
for something else. It is at this point that Kana Nico (Nicolas Sila, Nunguni
boys band) music started being played, as a change from the fast-paced benga
songs.
The first moment I heard Nicolas Sila’s songs, I
immediately knew this was a uniquely talented musician. What impressed me from
that time (and up to today) about Nicolas Silas music are three things. First
are the melodies/rythms that go with the songs. You just have to listen to them
for a couple of minutes to accept that a lot of work has gone into the
production of those songs. Second are the lyrics, which for the most part are
well-thought out lyrics, capable of entertaining without being too obscene. Third
is the poise with which Nicolas Sila Kana Niko of Nunguni boys band performs, especially if you happen to
watch his songs on VCD. It soon becomes clear that this is an artist with a
very strong stage presence, and one who has mastered the art of playing the one
man guitar genre to perfection.
